Ryan Courtier is an artist based in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk who’s work mainly comprises magazine clippings collaged together to make amazing scenes full of vibrancy, colour and psychedelic landscapes where anything goes, combined with different, unrelated images from around the globe.
Local nature walks are a massive influence throughout his work so I looked to incorporate this aspect into the piece as much as possible. Ryan’s studio is a place of meditative solitude and comfort for him, something that I hope comes through in the film.
After spending a couple of days getting to know Ryan I was lucky enough to document his creative process. For me, it is important that a person feels comfortable, and so on day one I usually film them in their natural habitat; giving us both a chance to get to know how each other works, and understand our different creative processes.
By day two, when both parties are more relaxed in each other’s company, this is usually the perfect time to conduct an interview. I find it is much easier to have an open conversation with someone you have built up a level of familiarity and trust with.
The outcome was a personal, emotive and inspiring product that Ryan can proudly use to showcase his talent.
“As an artist, one can often doubt your own work, but seeing this end result has made me realise my own sense of self worth. I was utterly speechless and can’t thank Pete enough.” Ryan Courtier, Artist
